Flower Care 101: Keep Your Blooms Beautiful at Home

Aug 7, 2023

Bringing home a beautiful bouquet of fresh flowers can instantly brighten up any space and add a touch of elegance. Whether you’ve received flowers as a gift or treated yourself to a floral arrangement, proper care is essential to ensure their longevity. Below are some easy tips and tricks to help you keep your arranged flowers looking fresh and vibrant for as long as possible.

Trim the Stems:
Start by trimming the stems of your flowers at a 45-degree angle. This creates a larger surface area for water absorption and prevents the ends from sitting flat at the bottom of the vase.
Use sharp, clean scissors or floral shears for a clean cut and to avoid crushing the stems.
Choose the Right Vase:
Select a vase that is clean, as bacteria can shorten the lifespan of your flowers. Wash the vase with warm, soapy water before using it.
Pick a vase that suits the size of your arrangement. Too small a vase can crowd the flowers, while a vase that’s too large may not provide enough support.
Water Wisely:
Fill the vase with fresh, lukewarm water. Avoid using cold water, as it can shock the flowers.
Add flower food or a homemade preservative to the water. These products contain nutrients that help nourish the blooms and keep bacteria at bay. Change the water every two to three days, or whenever it becomes cloudy or discolored. This prevents bacterial growth and maintains the freshness of your flowers.
Find the Perfect Location:
Place your floral arrangement away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and drafts. Sunlight and heat can accelerate the wilting process, while drafts can dehydrate the flowers.
Keep them away from ripening fruits, as the ethylene gas released by fruits can cause flowers to age more quickly.
Mist and Hydrate:
Mist your flowers with a fine spray of water to provide additional hydration and maintain their freshness.
If any flowers start to wilt prematurely, remove them from the arrangement to prevent the spread of bacteria to the rest of the blooms.
Handle with Care:
Avoid touching the petals or blooms excessively, as the oils from your hands can transfer to the flowers and cause them to deteriorate more quickly.
When handling delicate flowers, manipulate the blooms gently to prevent petals from bruising or snapping.
Consider Reconditioning:
If your flowers start to wilt but are still salvageable, you can try reconditioning them to extend their lifespan. Recut the stems and place the flowers in a bucket of warm water for a few hours or overnight before transferring them back into a clean vase with fresh water.

While flower care can sometimes seem daunting, you’re more than capable of sustaining beautiful arrangements keeping them looking fresh and vibrant for longer. By providing proper care and attention, you’ll be able to enjoy the beauty and fragrance of your blooms for days to come. Remember, a little effort goes a long way.. So, go ahead and bring home those lovely flowers, knowing you have the knowledge to care for them like a pro!
